What is a Hardship License and How Do I Get One?
A driver’s license suspension can have a major impact on your daily life. Most people rely on a car to get to work, pick up their children from school or daycare, and run errands. Without a vehicle, they would be left without a reliable means of transportation. If you have had your license suspended, you may be eligible to receive a hardship license during your suspension. A hardship license allows you to make necessary trips in the car even though your original driver’s license is under suspension.
Obtaining a Restricted Driving Permit
Many people who have their licenses revoked find that they have trouble getting to work on time, cannot reliably care for their children, or otherwise suffer significant hardship from having a suspended license. If this applies to you, you may request a hardship license or restricted driving permit (RDP), which will restore your ability to legally drive in some limited circumstances. To obtain an RDP, you generally must:
- Write a request to the Secretary of State
- Attend your assigned hearing
- Complete the necessary prerequisites if your request is accepted, which may include completing a Driver’s Risk Education course, inpatient alcohol treatment, aftercare, outpatient alcohol counseling, and/or enrollment in a support program
Once you obtain your RDP, you will be allowed to drive to certain restricted locations and may be assigned a driving curfew. For example, you may be allowed to drive to and from your job, to necessary errands, and to the school or daycare to pick up your children. If you are found driving for any other purpose, you may have your RDP revoked and may be penalized by the state.
