Auto Insurance for Rideshares

January 26, 2022
Share:

As a rideshare driver, it is important to consider having insurance that specifically covers rideshares when working for a company such as Uber and Lyft. Fortunately, some rideshare companies offer their own car insurance to their drivers, but the coverage is limited. In this article, we will help guide you through rideshare and personal insurance options to discover which option is best for you.

How Does Rideshare (such as Uber) Insurance Work?

Uber’s commercial auto insurance offered to its drivers is all about timing, which makes it slightly more complex when considering insurance coverage.  How it works is that, when drivers turn on their Uber app, their Uber insurance policy is activated.  If there are no passengers in the vehicle, a low-level liability insurance policy is switched on. This means that Uber provides less coverage for the driver when he/she is solo in the vehicle than when a passenger is present and is being driven to their destination. When the Uber app is off, the driver is covered only by their personal auto insurance policy. Therefore, it is most beneficial to have Uber’s insurance in tandem with a personal auto insurance policy for maximum coverage.

Commercial Automobile Use & Private Insurance

Because Uber limits coverage to whether or not you have a passenger (from an accepted ride through their app), it is important to consider additional insurance coverage to fill in the missing areas. Currently, it is a requirement by Uber for all of their drivers to attain their own personal insurance coverage.
(This includes Chicago Uber drivers.)

However, most automobile insurance companies that offer standard personal car insurance policies do not cover drivers that are employed through a rideshare company.  Few companies, such as Insure on the Spot offer some of the best rideshare insurance coverage.
