Teenage Drivers and Insurance

Many parents understandably dread the day their child is old enough to drive and actually gets his or her driver’s license. Not only is it confirmation that they are getting older, it also serves as a reminder that their child is no longer the baby they brought home from the hospital so many years ago. Parents also dread the day their children start driving because they realize that it means their child is at a high risk of being involved automobile accident.

Insurance companies recognize that teenagers are likely to be involved in accidents as well. As a result, they often charge higher rates for insuring individuals between the ages of 16 and 25. While some may scream ageism, the truth of the matter is that young drivers are much more likely to get into accidents than are individuals who have been driving longer.

One of the biggest factors that causes teenagers to get into accidents is inexperience. Teenagers do not have years of experience at their disposal in the event of unsafe driving conditions. The longer a person has been driving, the more experience he or she has to go by in reacting to a situation. Teenagers simply do not have that experience under their belt.

Another common factor is that teenagers are often less responsible as compared to their elders. This translates to a willingness to take chances while driving which could potentially result in serious accidents.
