What is SR-22 Financial Liability Insurance?
If you violate certain motor vehicle laws and have either your license or license plates revoked, there are certain steps you must take before you can legally begin driving again. Illinois state law mandates that you obtain SR-22 financial responsibility insurance and the corresponding SR-22 certificate before being re-issued your license or license plates. Typically, the DMV will notify an individual if he or she needs to obtain SR-22 insurance.

- DUI or DWI offense
- Inability to provide proof of insurance when asked by an officer to do so
- Being involved in an uninsured traffic accident
- Attempting to attain a hardship license
- Reckless driving
Any of these violations can result in the revocation of a driver’s license, and in individual is therefore required to attain SR-22 insurance prior to the return of his or her driving privilege.
What is the SR-22 Form?
A SR-22 form is not the insurance itself; rather, it is the certificate proving that the driver does in fact have financial responsibility insurance. This form is the only thing considered to be adequate for the reinstatement of one’s driver’s license. There are three SR-22 options for those wishing to purchase this type of coverage:
- Owner’s Certificate
- Non-owner/Operator’s Certificate
- Owner/Operator’s Certificate
Depending on several factors, you will select one of those three options to fit your needs.
